Volunteer Organization

Duet: Partners in Health & Aging

What is the purpose of the organization for which you volunteer?
Duet promotes health and well being through a broad range of services to older adults that need one-on-one support.

When did you start your adventure with volunteering?
I started on the Professional Advisory Committee in September 2012 and I became a board member in February 2014.

What duties do you perform to aid the organization?
I help structure financial planning workshops and have been a presenter for numerous sessions over the years. As a board member, I participate in the stewardship of Duet, help raise funds, and help raise awareness in the community.

Why is such an organization needed in the community?
There is a significant need for free services that address homebound adults (rides to doctor appointments, shopping, etc.), grandparents raising grandchildren and family caregiver services support groups.

What are your reasons for volunteering?
It initially started by my desire to help educate seniors on a variety of financial planning topics to better their lives. It is very satisfying to give back to the community and I feel fortunate that I am able to do so.

Which volunteering undertaking do you remember best? Did any of them bring you extraordinary emotions? Or rooted deeply in your memory?
A group of board members made calls one evening to past donors to thank them for their prior generosity and asked if they could help out during the slower summer season. One elderly donor commented that she would match her prior gift, but she wished she could give more.

What challenges do volunteers in your organization face?
Most of the volunteers serve homebound adults. They typically help the same client over time. Thus, a true friendship develops. The volunteer eventually loses their friend and will go through the same grieving process as if they lost a family member.

What rewards do you receive from your volunteer work?
Simply the sincere thank you’s.

What has volunteer work helped you learn about yourself?
I could make time out of my busy schedule to help others – it wasn’t that hard.

Could you give a piece of advice to people hesitating whether to undertake volunteering?
Start small and begin to learn how heartwarming and fulfilling helping others can be.
