Each fall, Duet, a non-profit organization that promotes health and wellbeing through a broad range of free services to older adults who need one-on-one support, sponsors a free financial planning workshop. The target audience is Duet volunteers, clients receiving Duet services, donors, and community friends.
The workshop is prepared and presented by members of the Duet Professional Advisory Committee. The recent workshop was held last month and there were approximately fifty attendees.
Workshop topics this year included:
- Medicare Update
- Wills and Trusts, How to Prevent Identity Theft
- Insurance Coverage (Property & Casualty and Life)
- Practical Steps for End of Life Planning
This was my fourth workshop as a presenter – I’ve done sessions on Social Security and Investing Basics in the past. This year I co-presented with Patty Park (from Northern Trust and a Duet board member) on Insurance – I did the property and casualty section. There has always been a “teacher gene” in me, so I truly love doing my small part in giving back to the community.
The workshop was well received by the attendees. In fact, Gordon Sims, who is the Director Development at Duet, emailed me with this comment:
“Thank you so much for your presentation and sharing your wisdom with us. I have a call in to my insurance agent this morning. Your info was VERY helpful.”
Gordon then shared at our follow-up Professional Advisory Committee meeting that he will save a thousand dollars per year on his property and casualty insurance premiums due to insights from the workshop. His feedback made my day!
I truly appreciate that Versant supports and encourages me to participate in outside activities that positively impact our community. I look forward to next year in planning the topics and being a presenter again.
